Built in 1866/67 by J.H. Holm in the Gothic style, the Royal Prussian Grammar School was a place of humanistic and Christian education for more than a century. The architectural style in particular was intended to emphasise the religiousness of the schools.

Six smaller houses had to make way for the school: the compastorate, the organist’s residence, the arithmetic master’s school and three private residences.

In 1870 it took in the old Husum scholars’ school, which had also been attended by Theodor Storm, and was given the official name “Royal Grammar School”. In 1914 it was renamed after Hermann Tast, the town’s reformer. Many of those who went through their education at the “Herrmann Tast School” have become public figures.

Some of the school’s teachers also became famous far beyond the country’s borders, such as Rudolf Eucken, who in 1908 became the second German to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature and whose name is now borne by the school’s gourmet restaurant. Hamburg businessman Johann Max Böttcher fulfilled a dream for himself and his wife when he had the former Herrmann Tast School converted into a luxury hotel between 1994 and 1996. Böttcher was born in Husum and graduated from this school.

His father was a teacher here for forty years. The long tradition of this stylish property is evident everywhere, for Böttcher, the building’s owner, had the building lovingly and meticulously remodelled. The attention to detail can be felt in all the rooms, for example in the large historic assembly hall, where frescoes and ornamental windows have been carefully restored. In October 2006, Johann Max Böttcher sold the hotel to Lenka Hansen-Mörck, owner of the Genießer Hotel Historischer Krug in Oeversee.
